1. What is an IDN character variant?

A variant is an alternative form of the domain name. The most common example is if you register a Chinese domain name which is Chinese character has two scripts for the same character, simplified and traditional. Someone may have already registered the simplified version of a domain, preventing you from registering the traditional version.

Registrants typically register domain names that have meaning in their own language such as a name, word or phrase. However, a single script may be used by more than one language. As a result, a domain name may have different meanings in the context of other languages or cultures. The variant phenomenon has been classified into four different categories: character, orthographic, lexemic, and contextual variants.

2. Will all variant resolving?

No, only the registered IDN with its puny code will store in the zone file.

TS : Traditional and Simplified Chinese words combination.

ST : Simplified and Traditional Chinese words combination.

TT : Traditional Chinese words only.

SS : Simplified Chinese words only.

√  : Variant domain name will be blocked from registration and will be resolved to the query i.e. when client query on TT and system will be resolved to the registered IDN i.e. TS.

X  : Variant domain name will be blocked from registration AND cannot be resolved.


In Example:

Any domain name registered in i.e. TS if there a variant domain name search will happen in TT and SS while the query will be extended to the registered IDN which is TS. But if domain name search under ST, thus related search and query could not be resolved.
